Questions, answered

Straight answers, before you have to ask for them.

Most firms in this category answer these on a call, if they answer them at all. Here they are on a page, so you can decide whether we are worth twenty minutes before you spend them.

We actually answer. Typical reply in under 15 minutes during business hours.

Working with SV

How do I actually start working with SV Financial?
You email us to book a consult, which takes about twenty minutes. On that call we establish what applies to you: which filings, which country, which years, and how many entities. You then get a written scope and a fixed fee, in the currency it will be invoiced in. Work starts once you accept it, and not before. There is no document handover required to get to that point.
How fast will you actually reply?
Typical reply is under 15 minutes during business hours, and we commit to a same-business-day reply. Reach us outside business hours and your message is captured and picked up first thing. Nothing falls through.
Will I be dealing with one person, or a shared inbox?
One named person owns your file end to end. You get their name at the start of the engagement, not after something goes wrong, and you are not passed between staff mid-season. Other people touch the file, a tax consultant reviews every return and a licensed practitioner of record signs off, but the person you talk to does not change.
Where are you based, and does it matter where I am?
SV FINANCIAL CONSULTING CORPORATION is an Ontario corporation based in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, serving US-Canada cross-border filers. Cross-border work is inherently remote, so the practical answer is that your location matters for your filing obligations and not for whether we can take you on. What we do need to know early is where you are resident, where your income arises, and where your entities are incorporated, which is exactly what the consult establishes.
Can the whole engagement be handled remotely?
Yes. Booking, the consult, document exchange, review and sign-off all happen remotely, which is how cross-border files are handled by anyone doing them properly. Documents are exchanged through a secure channel rather than by open email attachment, and how we handle your data is set out in our Privacy Policy.

Fees and quotes

How are your fees set?
Every engagement is a fixed fee. We scope your situation on the consult and confirm the fee in writing before any work starts. The number you agree is the number you pay.
What does the consult cost?
The scoping consult is not billed. It runs about twenty minutes, you do not need to hand over documents for it, and you leave knowing what applies to you and roughly what it costs. Nothing is invoiced unless you accept a written scope and a fixed fee first.
What changes a fee after I have been quoted?
Only a change in scope, and only with your agreement before the work happens. The usual causes are additional years on a back-filing, an additional entity, a reporting form that surfaces once we see your accounts, bookkeeping that has to be rebuilt before a return can be prepared, or a filing position that needs research beyond a standard treaty or foreign-tax-credit position. In every one of those cases you see the revised scope and the revised number first. Nothing appears on an invoice that you have not already agreed to.
Which currency will I be billed in?
Each fee is quoted in CAD, before HST. Your invoicing currency is confirmed in the engagement agreement before you accept it, so there is nothing to work out after the fact.
What if my situation is more complex than a starting fee?
That is what the consult is for. Published figures describe a standard file, and plenty of cross-border files are not standard: multiple entities, several open years, foreign reporting nobody flagged, or a position that needs documenting. We scope it, tell you plainly what it takes, and give you one fixed number before starting. For ongoing needs beyond filing, Virtual CFO and fractional advisory is a custom engagement scoped the same way.

Cross-border filing

Do I have to file in both countries?
It depends on your citizenship, your residency and where your income arises, and those three do not always point the same way. US citizens and green card holders generally have a US filing obligation regardless of where they live, including while resident in Canada. Canadian residents generally have a Canadian filing obligation on worldwide income. Plenty of people sit in both categories at once, which is the situation this firm was built for. What applies to you specifically is established on a consult. Indicative only, not tax advice.
Will I be taxed twice on the same income?
The Canada and United States tax treaty and the foreign tax credit rules exist to prevent exactly that, and applying them correctly is most of the work on a cross-border file. We take the position that fits your facts and document it. What that means for your specific numbers is what the consult establishes, and we will not tell you the answer before we have seen the facts. Indicative only, not tax advice.
Do I need to file an FBAR?
The US FBAR (FinCEN Form 114) is generally triggered when the aggregate value of your non-US financial accounts exceeds $10,000 USD at any point in the year. Aggregate is the word that catches people: it is every account added together, not any single balance, and accounts you only signed on are often included. Thresholds are indicative and change over time. Run the two-question filing check on our site or book a consult and we will confirm your position properly. Indicative only, not tax advice.
What is T1135, and does it apply to me?
T1135 is the Canadian foreign income verification statement, generally required when the total cost of your specified foreign property exceeds $100,000 CAD at any point in the year. What counts as specified foreign property is narrower than most people assume in some places and wider in others, which is why it gets missed. Thresholds are indicative and change over time. A short consult confirms whether it applies to you. Indicative only, not tax advice.
I have not filed the US side in years. What happens now?
Back-year filing is regular work here. We establish how many years are open, what has to be prepared, and what it costs, before you commit to anything. What a tax authority does with a late filing is their decision and not ours, so we will not promise you an outcome, a penalty result, or acceptance into any particular program. What we will do is tell you plainly what your options are and what each one involves, so you are choosing with the facts in front of you.
Can you handle just one side if I already have a preparer for the other?
Yes, and it is a common starting point. We review what has already been filed, make sure the second filing lines up with it, and flag anything on the first return that will cause a mismatch. If the two sides need to be coordinated differently from how they are being handled now, we tell you that before we start rather than after you have paid for the work.

Credentials and who signs

Who reviews my return before it is filed?
A tax consultant reviews every return before it is filed. The CFA charter is a designation in investment analysis and financial judgment, which is what a cross-border position actually turns on: which country taxes what, in what order, and at what cost to you. The full credential position is set out on our credential disclosure page.
Who signs my return?
Returns are reviewed and signed off by a licensed practitioner of record. We state that plainly rather than leaving you to work it out, because "who actually signs this" is the question most firms in this category avoid answering on their website. The full detail, including what that means for your file, is on our credential disclosure page.
What credentials does the firm hold?
Our advisory is led by Chartered Financial Analysts. A tax consultant reviews every return, and returns are reviewed and signed off by a licensed practitioner of record. We publish the full position, including the designations we hold and the ones we do not, on our credential disclosure page. It is a short page and it is worth reading before you hand any firm your financial information, ours included.
Is there anything you do not take on?
Yes, and we list it plainly rather than letting you find out after you have booked. The services that sit outside our scope are named on our credential disclosure page, along with the credential position behind that boundary. If what you need is on that list, tell us on the consult and we will say so straight away instead of stretching to cover it.
